You will write a Children's Literature textbook

• Students will write one essay that addresses a topic related to one of the genres that we are studying, and students will write 3 annotations per week about books that fit into the genre (see class assignment for details). Students will also be responsible for writing one author study, one illustrator study, and one theme study during the first seven weeks of class.
• On this wiki, I have set up seven chapters that correspond to the seven genres or types of books that we will look at during the first seven weeks of class.
• Students must sign up for a content area to prevent duplication of efforts. You may sign up in advance.
  • Content sign-up is first come first serve. You should sign up for one of the content topics. Only one person may sign up for a topic.
  • To sign up click on the chapter name (navigation along left side of page), select the EDIT button (on top right side of screen) and write your name next to the content that you wish to write about.
  • Make sure to choose SAVE when you are done (in Editor bar, top of page, right side). No more than one person may write about each topic area.
  • You will post your content to the wiki and submit your content to the course drop box (there are three separate drop boxes-submit your first paragraph to drop box one, submit your second paragraph to drop box two, and submit your third paragraph to drop box three. Paragraphs on a genre are due on the last day of the week in which we are examining that genre.

Assignment Overview (Specific guidelines found on Blackboard)

• One Week Per Student Students will select a topic from one of the chapters and write three page essay about the genre being studied that week. Only one person per topic. Content will be submitted to the Blackboard drop box by the end of the topic week and posted to the wiki.
  • The content must be in your own words. To gather the information, you may use a variety of sources (PPT, children's literature text book, web information, articles from professional journals, or author's notes at the beginning or end of the children's books, often a great source of information). However, I want you to synthesize the information that you find and write your paragraph, in your own words and your own style.
  • To post your content to the wiki, go to the appropriate chapter, click on the heading which is a link to the page for that heading, click the EDIT button. Paste your content on the page for that heading. Remember to Save when you are done.
• Seven Weeks Per Student Each week every student will write 3 annotations for books that fit into the genre for the week. You will post your annotations weekly to the wiki and submit your annotations in one cumulative file at the end of week seven to the course drop box for grading.
  • Annotations should be brief and include title of work, author, illustrator; brief summary of plot; major theme or topic of book; reading or grade level;and a brief comment on what you love about the work.
  • To post your annotations to the wiki, go to the appropriate chapter, click the link for that chapter that says Annotations. This will open the annotations page for that chapter. Click the EDIT button. Paste your annotations under the heading. Remember to Save when you are done.

Midterm Project

• Author Study
  • Choose any author who writes literature for children (kindergarten through 6th grade) and write a thorough description of the author and her works.
  • Post the Author Study to the appropriate wiki chapter and submit it to the assignment drop box for grading.
• Illustrator Study
  • Choose any illustrator of children's books and write a thorough description of the illustrator.
  • Include books that he or she has illustrated.
  • Include style of artwork.
  • Post the Illustrator Study to the appropriate wiki chapter and submit it to the assignment drop box for grading.
• Theme Study
  • Choose a theme that appears in the literature for children (kindergarten through 6th grade) and design a lesson for using the theme in the classroom.
  • Post the Theme Study to the appropriate wiki chapter and submit it to the assignment drop box for grading.
• This text book will be available for you to use (and continue contributing to) after the course is over.
